📜 Rich in History, Rooted in Community
Chugiak and Eagle River began as small homesteading settlements in the early 1900s. The name “Chugiak” comes from a Dena’ina Athabascan word meaning “place of many places.” These lands were historically used by Alaska Native peoples for hunting, fishing, and seasonal travel.
Post–World War II, the area began to grow rapidly as servicemembers stationed at nearby Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) chose to settle in this scenic and welcoming area. Eagle River eventually became known as the gateway to the Mat-Su Valley and a vital suburban hub of Anchorage.
