⚓ Welcome to Seward, Alaska

🐋🏔️ Gateway to the Kenai Fjords

Cradled between majestic mountains and the sparkling waters of Resurrection Bay, Seward is a scenic, historic, and adventurous coastal town on the Kenai Peninsula. Known as the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, Seward offers a stunning mix of marine life, glaciers, and small-town charm—a true jewel of Southcentral Alaska.

📜 A Historic Port with Deep Roots

Seward’s history begins with the Alutiiq (Sugpiaq) people, who lived for thousands of years along this rugged coastline, relying on the rich marine environment for survival and cultural tradition 🐚.

In 1793, Russian explorers mapped the area, but Seward as we know it began in 1903, when it became the southern terminus of what would become the Alaska Railroad 🚂. The town was named after William H. Seward, the U.S. Secretary of State who orchestrated the purchase of Alaska from Russia in 1867.

Thanks to its ice-free port and strategic location, Seward quickly developed into a transportation and supply hub. Though severely damaged by the 1964 Good Friday Earthquake and tsunami, the resilient community rebuilt and has since thrived as both a working harbor and top visitor destination.

🌊 Nature, Wildlife & Endless Adventure

Seward is the launching point for Kenai Fjords National Park, where dramatic fjords, tidewater glaciers 🧊, and rugged cliffs meet abundant marine life. Boat tours, kayaking, and flightseeing adventures offer opportunities to see humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, puffins 🐧, and even calving glaciers.

On land, the Exit Glacier and Harding Icefield Trail attract hikers from around the world, while the coastal trail system, fishing charters 🎣, and scenic drives offer something for every explorer.

🎣 Coastal Culture & Community Spirit

Seward blends adventure with authenticity. Its colorful harbor, cozy shops, art galleries, and local eateries reflect the town’s character and pride. The community celebrates its heritage through events like the Mount Marathon Race 🏃‍♂️—a grueling and iconic mountain run every Fourth of July—and the Silver Salmon Derby each August.

Whether it’s locals gathering for a bonfire on the beach or welcoming visitors from cruise ships and RVs, Seward is known for its hospitality, creativity, and strong community bonds.

🏡 A Beautiful Place to Visit or Call Home

With its natural wonders, rich culture, and strong sense of place, Seward is more than a destination—it’s a lifestyle. Whether you’re drawn by the sea, the mountains, or the quiet beauty of a glacier-fed bay, Seward invites you to explore, connect, and stay awhile.
